Berkeley Live/Work Studio

The owner of a home in Berkeley had a small letterpress studio in an old one story garage in her back yard.  This building was run down and needed major repairs.  She decided to tear down the garage and build a new live/work studio in the same footprint.  The studio includes an area for her printing press with a meeting space, a small bathroom and a galley type kitchen situated under a loft area.  The loft above functions as an office where she does her design work.  The live/work studio is filled with natural light from numerous windows and an operable skylight over the loft area.  A sliding barn type glazed door on the ground level leads to a covered patio with a translucent canopy for protected out door seating. This patio area is connected to a beautiful garden shared with the main house.  The loft has a small metal “Romeo & Juliet” balcony where one can step outside and enjoy the garden and the trees.
